Hunting Knives
Hunting knives have large fixed blades that are protected
by a sheath. The usually have a gentle curve to the blade edge, and
they are only sharpened on one side to give them more strength. Many
also have a gut hook at the top which is useful in preparing game animals
and even fishing.
Hunting knives often have intricately carved and decorated handles
made from wood, bone, horns, rubber and many other durable materials.
Some completely forgo handles to keep weight down, relying on an ergonomic
metal hilt for grip. The blades are fixed, as opposed to folding, and
are generally made from tempered steel, but composite carbon blades
and combinations of materials are now widely used as well.
Hunting knives are often kept in sheath close to the hunters waist,
although some sheaths attach to the chest, back, leg and arms depending
on the hunter’s preference. They should be safe when moving, but
easy to access when needed. They are exceptionally useful for a variety
of tasks beside game preparation.
