Folding Knives
The most common folding knives are pocket knives with
multiple tools. Some come with locking blades, but the locking mechanism
takes up a lot of space in the handle of the knife, so most utility
knives hold the blade in place with tension springs or bars. This allows
for more blades and tools to be fitted into the hilt of the blade.
Folding knives can be safer than a rigid knife. No sheath is needed
because all the tools and sharp edges are safely folded into the handle
of the knife. On models with locking mechanisms the blade can be secured
so it will not accidentally close. There are a few different mechanisms
for locking the blade, some very safe while others are easier to open
and close.
Folding knives have special parts on the blade to allow them to be
easily opened. On Swiss Army knives, a very popular knife company, the
blade has a nick in it allowing a fingernail to open the blade. Other
blades have a stud, peg or a hole to allow for one handed opening. Some
have a flipper mechanism that allows them to open rapidly and easily.
